BRIGIDINE CRITERIA FOR AN EDUCATION THAT IS CATHOLIC
We climb the mountain for the vision, but we have to walk, often
over stones, to put flesh on that set of beliefs.
A belief in the redemptive love of God and faith in Jesus Christ
are central to the school's existence. This belief and faith often
leads to judgments contrary to those accepted by society.
The following set of criteria help us evaluate the authenticity,
of the school as a place for an education that is Catholic.
1. The history of the Catholic Church is explored and experienced,
especially in relation to the concepts of service, sacrament, spirituality
and ritual.
2. There is an intent to empower learners and give them opportunities
to develop critical and reflective world views, a capacity to seek
change and to challenge the direction of that change.
3. Those who are most vulnerable are given a special welcome and
the educational commu- nity are seen to be in solidarity with them.
4. The intrinsic worth of each individual is recognised.
5. Hope and a sense of purpose are engendered.
6. Emphasis is given to a community where all individuals have opportunities
to develop their own gifts while helping the giftedness of others.
7. Insightful learning is encouraged and broad and diverse experiences
offered that develop all learners to the extent of their potential.
8. There is recognition that the non-material aspects of education
– love, insight, forgiveness, service - are more important
than the material.
9. Justice is both imaged and practised.
10. There is joy and gratitude and celebration of all the good things
received and a corresponding sense of responsibility for those things
fostered.
