I have been actively involved in education for
nearly half a century. I should be getting tired but I am actually
still feeling quite energised. I wouldn't have missed any part of
the involvement - being first a Primary school teacher for a few
years, then a long time as a teacher in Brigidine Secondary schools,
a Principal for many years, on a Resource team for some time, working
in a Diocesan CEO for three years.
The best part has been all the marvelous people
I have met and worked with over the years. Currently, I am the Co-ordinator
of the Brigidine Secondary Schools' Council (B.S.S.C.). In this
position I work closely with the school Principals who are all wonderful.
I am passionate about education and particularly that aspect of
educating which opens doors to young people, giving them a richness
of life that would not otherwise be possible. I wish teaching was
valued by our community as a way of enlivening and enlightening
rather than credentialling.
I am interested in what schools offer as learning
possibilities but I am even more interested in how people learn.
I think we have a long way to go in really understanding why some
people find it hard to learn at times and why there are such different
rates of learning even for the one individual. I think Brigidine
schools should be inclusive and welcoming places and I would like
them to be known for their happiness, their excitement and innovation,
and their compassion. I have great faith in teachers and I believe
we continue to strive for these goals.
