The History of Brigidine School Governance
Until 1970, Brigidine schools were largely staffed and administered
by Brigidine Sisters. The provincial Leader and Council were responsible
for assigning Sisters to each school and for major decisions such
as buying land or building. Apart from this the schools operated
with a large degree of autonomy, although the Province Leadership
Council retained final authority.
- 1993 the Province established the Brigidine Secondary School's
Council (B.S.S.C.) with a number of terms of reference, one which
was "to address the question of long term governance which
is just and educationally sound".
- 1994 a program of Renewal and Development was begun to explore
and develop more systematically the beliefs and traditions of
the schools as Catholic and Brigidine.
- 1995 after some extensive research, a model of school council
(Stewardship Council) was accepted.
- 1996 Two seminars were held for Leaders in Brigidine schools
and others who were interested in being involved in the ministry
of Stewardship Councils in Brigidine sponsored schools.
- Between May 1996 to May 1997 inaugural Stewardship Councils
were established in each school.
- 1997 a Brigidine Sponsorship Group was established to act as
the Trustees for the schools.
- 1997-2002 The BSSC has continued to research ways for the ultimate
transition of the schools from Brigidine to other sponsorship.
