The Role of the Brigidine Sisters in Governance

The Brigidine Sisters own the property of the school (or have the use of the property as they wish while they administer the school) and they have certain reserve powers by virtue of the church law. Acting on behalf of the Province, a number of Sisters will exercise this responsibility. This group will be known as the Brigidine Sponsorship Group.

In the final analysis the Brigidines retain the responsibility for the mission and philosophy of the school but they wish to exercise this responsibility by working in partnership with the School Stewardship Council and the school staff.

Specifically, the following rights will be retained by the Brigidine Province (exercised through the Brigidine Sponsorship Group):

  • The mission and philosophy of the school
  • The adoption and amendment of the Constitutions and, in the event of incorporation, the Articles of Association
  • Any change in the direction of the school
  • Appointment of the school auditor
  • Ensuring a balanced budget and approving it
  • Borrowing for capital or recurrent purposes
  • The encumbrance, purchase, sale, lease of any of the property
  • The appointment of the Principal
  • The appointment of Stewardship Council members
  • The removal of a Stewardship Council member on the recommendation of, or after consultation with the Stewardship Council
  • A review of the operations of the Stewardship Council
