Strategy for dealing with an issue of social justice in the classroom
Always begin with something that people have a personal experience of or interest in. In other words begin with experience. If you don't have the experience take a case study of someone's experience.
Start to ask questions
- Why is this person/environment a victim
- Who benefits from this person/land not being in control
- Who else loses?
- What is the actual effect on people?
- Why hasn't this situation changed?
- What has been tried?
Start to think of possible answers and solutions
- Find out what ideas are held by those who benefit?
- What ways could both sides benefit?
The Horse's mouth
- Get someone to come and speak about this issue, video, etc. so that we actually have the real experience.
- Try out the ideas we have had.
- Find out what the group has done to change the situation
Devise a new explanation in light of further information
Are our insights and ideas just?
- Are we saying that it is natural for this people
- Are we blaming the victim
- Are we rationalizing the injustice out of sight?
- Do we say these victims will cope?
If we are happy an action will have arisen FOR US TO TAKE
The faith tradition should influence all stages
