Preamble
Kilbreda College is a Catholic secondary school for girls, founded
in 1904. The school is owned and administered by the Brigidine Sisters.
The College badge and motto, Strength and Kindliness, are those
of the Congregation of St Brigid and all Brigidine Schools.
The historic "Mentone Coffee Palace" was
one of a group of "tower buildings" built in the Mentone
area in the 1880's. The stockmarket crash of the 1890's led to it's
closure at this time. The Coffee Palace lay dormant for a number
of years until it was purchased by the Brigidines, fully furnished,
for the "ridiculous sum" of 2050 pounds!
Originally known as St Brigid's or simply Brigidine Convent, it
was renamed Kilbreda from te Gaelic Cill and Breda, meaning church
or place of Brigid.
Kilbreda Today
Kilbreda's population of over 1000 students is largely
drawn from the muncipalities of Kingston and Bayside, areas experiencing
new growth on some of its boundaries. Located in the heart of Mentone's
busy business, retail and transport hub, Kilbreda has long established
links with a number of community groups.
In partnership with families and the kilbreda Brigidine
Stewardship Council we are commited to a rounded, dynamic education
that empowers young people to engage with the world.
Girls are valued for their individuality, and are
encouraged to understand the opportunities their own lives present
and appreciate differences within a community.
Kilbreda's physical environment blends traditional
and contemporary buildings, modern facilities and attractive gardens
and grounds.
At Kilbreda we build on almost a hundred years of
wisdom in educating young women to value their Catholic heritage
and discover a place for themselves in a changing world.
